Do I have toenail fungus?
You may first notice a white spot on your nail. In some cases the nail can turn a darkest color such as brown to black, depending on the strain of fungus. This spot may grow into yellow streaks on the bed of your nail. Your nail may become more discolored and brittle over time. It then becomes thickened and may flake or crumble around the edges. The surface of the nail may also become soft and appear powdery. While toenail fungus most often begins painless, it can become painful over time if left untreated.

Can I prevent toenail fungus?
Preventing toenail fungus begins with keeping your feet and toes clean and dry. Always wear socks and change them daily. If you frequent damp places like public pools or locker rooms, be sure to always wear shower shoes and avoid making direct contact between the bottom of your foot with the floor. Never share socks, shoes or manicure instruments. Use anti-fungal powder to keep your feet dry throughout the day.

Treating toenail fungus depends on its severity. Some cases of toenail fungus respond to at-home over-the-counter treatments. However, some more stubborn cases will require help from your podiatrist. Prescription antifungal pills or topical medications are stronger and more effective than over-the-counter varieties. Very severe cases will require a surgical procedure to remove the nail.
