Are you prone to getting ingrown toenails? Certain “bad” habits may be to blame.
You only have to put up with an ingrown toenail once to decide you’re never going to put up with it again. Some serious ingrown toenails even require immediate care from our Bloomington, IL, podiatrist, Dr. Gerald Paul. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk for an ingrown toenail. These steps include:
Let Your Feet Breathe
If you wear shoes that are just a bit too tight or put pressure on your toes, this could be the reason that you’re dealing with ingrown toenails in the first place. Even socks and stockings that are too tight can put too much pressure on your toenails. This is why it’s important to stay away from shoes that don’t fit or shoes with pointed toes. Whenever possible, opt for supportive footwear that allows your toes ample space and room to breathe.
Trim Nails Properly
Don’t not trim at a curve, or try to angle the edges of the nails, as this can cause ingrown toenails. If you have diabetes, you should turn to our Bloomington, IL, office to have this done.
Don’t Trim too Short
If you trim your nails below the tips of your toes you are also leaving your toenails prone to an ingrown toenail. If you do accidentally trim the nail too short, use a filing board and gently smooth down any sharp edges to prevent the nail from piercing and growing into the skin.
